14. Shades of Gray

DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE ARE OVER A DOZEN DEFINITIONS OF GRAY IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE? What do you think of when you hear the word gray? Your response is probably shaded with some emotional tint. It should be no surprise that gray is one of the workhorses of interior palettes because of its neutral qualities. But’s so much more than that. This achromatic hue can be moody, dramatic, expansive, evocative and complex, but it is never boring. It’s one of those foundational shades that can take the lead in a scheme on its own or set the stage for a full range of accent colors. By combining white and black in varying quantities can create saturation levels ranging from lead white to fog to kohl. Consider the endless possibilities the shades of gray have to offer.
